Vegan recipes – turmeric potatoes with tomatoes and garlic mayo

Hi everyone

One of my favourite foods as I think I have mentioned before is potatoes and one of my favourite ways to eat them is patatas bravas. This is a Mediterranean tapas dish that is fried potatoes with a tomatoes sauce on top and aioli. I have this every time I go for tapas. So when I tried to make this at home I was aiming for something similer but I thought I would do it with a little twist so I made turmeric flavour potatoes with tomato sauce and vegan garlic mayo.

IMG_1411

So here is what you need:

For the turmeric fried potatoes you need potatoes (as many as you like), olive oil, pepper, white wine vinegar, garlic and of course turmeric.

IMG_1407

For the tomatoes sauce you need chopped tomatoes, pepper, white wine vinegar and paprika.

IMG_1408

To make this you need to chop the potatoes thin and small, don’t worry too much but you basically need to ensure that they are as much as you can the same size so that they cook all together. Put them in a pan with about 3 table spoons of olive oil. Add in the garlic, turmeric, white wine vinegar and pepper and leave to cook turning occasionally to make sure that all the potatoes recooking as evenly as you can. For me for the size of the potatoes in the bowl took about 20 minutes.

While this is cooking you can do your tomato sauce. I used half a tin of chopped tomatoes (the cheapest you can find), add them to a pan and add in your pepper and paprika to taste. If you want this to be spicy you can add in chilli as well.

IMG_1409

Mix this all together and let them simmer for the same time it takes to cook the potatoes.

Once the potatoes are cooked you can add them into a bowl ready to serve. You will know that the potatoes are cooked because they are brown and crispy at the edges and soft in the middle.

IMG_1410

For patatas bravas they put the tomato sauce on top and leave the aioli as a dipping sauce but I left both the tomato and the garlic mayo as a dipping sauce.

Then most importantly enjoy.

Let me know if you try these or if you have any alternatives for patatas bravas.

Lush haul – vegan

Hi everyone

Its been a little while since I did a Lush haul so I thought it was high time I did another one. I love Lush and it leaves very little explaining as I see so many other hauls and blogs about Lush that I know it is loved. So here is what I got this time and why.

IMG_1327

The first item I got was the sleepy body lotion, I have had this quite a few times and I just love it. I really do believe it helps me sleep. For those of you who haven’t heard of this then if you read the reviews you will see how many people credit this with allowing them to get a good night sleep. Its a really pretty purple body lotion which I love and it smells amazing with as you might expect Lavender. I found that quite a small tub lasted a long while as I didn’t use it as an all over body lotion I used it on my chest and arms right before I went to bed so that I could smell it and it sent me off to sleep. It costs £13.95 which is good value if you use it sparingly.

IMG_1330

The next item was given to me as a birthday present and it is The Big Sleepy Jelly Bomb. This smells so good again of Lavender and is a really big bomb compared to others I have used. I haven’t used a Jelly bomb before but apparently they are really good at moisturising and softening the skin.

IMG_1329

This will go perfectly with sleepy, I need to choose this wisely to use as a combination so I am thinking maybe a Friday night after a long week at work the combination will be amazing.

IMG_1328

Moving to the face I have Let the good times roll facial cleanser.  It smells amazing, literally like popcorn but not overly sweet and kind of fresh. It does scrub the dead skin away but is really soft as I do have to be careful as I have sensitive skin. It doesn’t last as long as some of the other cleansers I used although that could be my fault using too much each time as it is a textured scrub rather than a paste initially. This £7.50 so quite reasonably priced.

IMG_1331

IMG_1332

The next 2 products are the ones I am most excited about and they are the Jelly face masks.

IMG_1333

IMG_1334

The first one is the 1000 millihelens and this I got as a birthday gift. This product contain witch hazel which is really good for blemishes and also green tea and apple which are designed to tighten and tone the skin and pores. The jelly masks are a little strange in texture as you pull a bit out and it feels like putty and then you mix it between you hands and it softens to a paste which you can then easily spread. I left this on for about 10 minutes and it dried but didn’t give my face the really tight feel I normally get with masks which was nice.

IMG_1335

The second one is the Bunny Moon and I have used quite a lot of this one, I have used it 3 times so far and as you can see I have over half left so it is really good value for money. The bunny moon is designed with chamomile to soothe the skins and soften. This is more moisturising that 1000 Millihelens but actually the texture is very similar and again left my skin feeling really soft and supple.

IMG_1336

So that is the Lush products I have been using and loving. Let me know what you have recently brought from Lush and what you have been loving.

Hand and nail care – not tested on animals

Hi everyone

I really struggle to keep my hand from getting dry. I am not really sure what makes my hand so dry, I work in an office so it could be the paper or tapping away on my laptop, it could be the air con or the hand dryers or it could just be doing house hold chores. Whatever the reason it is a constant battle to fend off dry skin. So I have found a few products from companies that don’t test on animals that seem to be doing the trick.

IMG_0956

So its a bit of a random mixture of products but let me explain them. Firstly you may have spotted that the first product is actually a body wash it is the Original Source mint and tee tree body scrub. I really like Original source generally as there products are so good and smell amazing, I find that this scrub is not ‘scrubby’ enough for most of my body I use exfoliating gloves as I do like to have a really good scrub but I find this is perfect for my hands to give them a good scrub but without being too rough to get rid of all the dead skin and get my hands ready for the moisturiser. This cost around a £1 and I got this and another body wash 2 for £2 so really affordable.

IMG_0962

Next is use a hand cream and my current one is the Superdrug strengthen nail moisturiser for hands. I like this cream as it is really good to take to work as it soaks in really quickly and I don’t have to sit there with greasy hands for ages waiting for this to dry. It also lasts really well as I tend to try and put this on once an hour (I have good days and bad days). This cost around £2 from Superdrug.

Another current hand cream I am using is the Primark Argon oil hand cream. I really like Primark generally but like with the clothes you need to be choosy as it can be hit and miss as to the quality.  This is one of the good ones again it soaks in really well and smells good. It is quite subtle which I like because I wear perfume and I don’t want my moisturiser to over power that smell. This is a smaller tube which is good for traveling or keeping in my handbag. This was also really good value at £1. I do tend to go for cruelty free products not just not tested on animals but this is one to keep in mind.

IMG_0963

The last couple of products are a bit random as they are actually body moisturisers. However I really like to use them before bed on my hands as they smell so amazing so this is the Primark Body soufflé in cucumber and peppermint and the Lush Once upon a time body lotion. The Primark soufflé is amazing, it is so fresh and clean. It is probably too much to wear in the day due to the peppermint but for evening its lovely. This only cost £2.50 so it is very affordable.

The Lush Once upon a time is one of my favourite body lotions and I do use it as a body lotion but I like to use this just before bed on my hands just to refresh the smell (as well as moisturise). This is the most expensive product at £6.50 and looking at the UK website I don’t seem to be able to find this so if you did want this I think you can still get it on ebay. I’m sure I could recommend a million other Lush moisturisers though if you cant find this one. (sad face)

IMG_0965

So that is a run down of the hand products I use however I am always up for recommendation so please let me know if you have use any good products even if they are not 100% designed for hands. I would love to hear.

Vegan basil, paprika and lemon potatoes

Hi everyone

One thing that that has always been a staple in my diet vegan or before is potatoes, there are so many different varieties and I love trying different recipes. My current favourite is basil, paprika and lemon potatoes.

Boil your potatoes, the portion size depends on you and how many people you are cooking for. I always make too many but they can be eaten hot or cold so don’t worry too much.

While they are boiling you can make your ‘source’, take a some mint (you can either use fresh mint or mint source, I prefer the source as it coats the potatoes) in a bowl, add the juice of one whole lemon, some vegan butter, black pepper, paprika and some chilli if you like a bit of a kick. I have added coriander before also although I didn’t add it to mine this time as I was cooking for others and it is quite a strong flavour. Mix this all together and leave it to ‘soak’ together while the potatoes are boiling.

IMG_1341

Once the potatoes are done cover them in the source and serve. If you are serving with a hot dinner you can eat immediately or if you are using with a cold dinner or on another day then leave to cool and place in the fridge, when you are ready to eat just stir well and serve.

I love simple dishes that can be put together quickly and paired with any other foods. I had this at a BBQ and was eaten by meat eaters as well as vegans.  Its also quite a good after work meal as you can shove it in the oven , have your shower an it will be done.

What are your favourite recipes for quick simple dishes, let me know if you try this dish.

Waitrose vegan skin care

Hi everyone

I am a big fan of Waitrose food but it hasn’t really been a place I would have thought of straight away for skincare. I had a recommendation for there products and low and behold they are vegan. I think its a reasonably new range and I haven’t tried it all yet but I am working my way through and the ones I have tried so far I have been impressed.

IMG_1292

So the products I have tried are the Pure Hydration Hot cloth cleanser, the Overnight moisturiser and the day cream with SPF 15.

IMG_1326

The hot cloth cleanser I have had twice now and I really like it, it is a lot thicker than a lot of other hot cloth cleansers I have tried and the first time I used it I made a mistake and tried to use it with out the cloth and just in the shower and it was almost so thick it was water proof.

IMG_1293

Once I had got the cloth though it was lovely, its goes on really smoothly as it contains an oil but it doesn’t leave a residue on your skin it really cleans but doesn’t strip the skin. You can use this every day but I would actually use this as a special treatment so spread on the skin warm the cloth and lay in over your face and lay back and relax for a few minutes. It smells great as well so it is very relaxing. This cost around £4 but there are currently some offers on at Waitrose.

IMG_1294

The face moisturiser I actually got for holiday as it contains an SPF 15 which isn’t very high but a good base for moving around the hotel and to the beach before putting on sun lotion. I am often wary of SPF moisturisers while I do think they are really important to really wear every day I often find them very thick, greasy and make me break out. I have been really surprised by this one as it is non of the above but really light and non greasy. It has also lasted me a long while I am onto the third week and for the last week I have ran out of my night moisturiser so twice a day and I have about a quarter left. I also had a it in my beach bag so got warm there as well. This was also about £4, so they are really reasonably priced.

IMG_1291

The final thing I have is the overnight hydration face mask. I have used this over night once and it was like waking up after about 15 hours sleep. My skin felt soft and smooth and my forehead and cheeks which are the driest felt really hydrated. It was sticky or greasy and I didn’t feel like it feel like it all went on my pillow the minute I tried to sleep. These are the one use packets and cost about £2 so really good value.

IMG_1325

All in all I am really impressed with the products and will be trying more of the range. Let me know if you have used these or any of the other products in the range, any recommendation welcome.

Vegan yogurts – review

Hi everyone

One things I have found since I went vegan if that there are less ready to eat snacks and lunch accompaniments and the ones that there are tend to be a little unhealthy. To fill this gap I have been using yogurt and I have a few favourites depending on what time of day it is.

IMG_1247

I have the Koko dairy free peach and passion fruit, the Alpro protein soya in passion fruit and the the plain Alpro high in protein yogurt.

The Koko dairy free peach and passion fruit is a pack of 2 and they cost me £1 from Morrison’s and I believe they come in raspberry flavour as well. They are quite thin as yogurts go but I don’t think that if you would be able to tell the difference if you were used to dairy yogurts. They taste really good but not very filling so to go with lunch rather than a snack. I really liked these and strange mention but the sell by date on non diary yogurts is much longer so bulk by on any deals!

The Alpro soya yogurt in passion fruit is the opposite as it is very thick and very filling. It has a layer of fruit at the bottom and then the thick yogurt on top. It is more expensive as it was 85 pence for 1 yogurt and I cant see that they do any multi packs but sometimes the supermarkets do 4 for 3 or a similar deal.  I have taken this yogurt to work for breakfast before and it has filled me up. It taste really good though and it is almost luxurious, I would say its more the texture of moose than yogurt but I really like it.

Finally I have the Alpro soya high in protein plain yogurt and this I originally brought to be similar to Greek yogurt where you would have with honey and I thought maybe I could have it with maple syrup. I actually had this over chia seeds and cereal with raspberries. I would actually recommend this as a savoury sauce as well pasta which I will be trying soon.

Let me know of there is any yogurts you love and want to recommend. Let me know what you think of these yogurts if you try them.

How I dye my hair – vegan hair dye

Hi everyone

In the past few years I have had lots of different hair colours and my poor hair has been well and truly destroyed, I’ve been blonde (many different shades), red, purple, brown and lack and probably a few I have forget. Add that too all the straightening and styling.

This situation actually got worse by going vegan initially as I made the transition to go cruelty free with my hair and beauty products before even going vegetarian never mind fully vegan and that meant grabbing the first hair dye I saw that was cruelty free. This was cheap and really damaging for my hair on top of some really bad damage that was already happening. My hairdresser was telling me off and my hair was really stretchy and breaking off to the point that it almost looked like layer ripped into my hair (not a good look).

It was at this point that I found Henna, I had gone back and forth with the thought of using Henna as I didn’t have much faith that it would actually dye my hair and more importantly cover greys, I thought it was more to tone your hair. I can safely say though that it was the best thing I have ever done!

IMG_1189

I use the Henna from Lush in the shade Brun which I believe is the brownest of the four colours. For those of you who are new to Henna there is a red undertone to Henna so the colours range in how much red they have in them and the end result is different based on that. My hair in some lights has a red glow to it but generally if you saw my hair you would say it was dark brown.

Please do note that my hair was dark brown before applying Brun and so the colour has maintained but not changed. I would recommend that you talk to a Lush consultant before trying any of these shades as different people will see different effect depending on the colour you hair is at time of dying.

The way Henna works is that is coats the strands of hair rather than penetrates the hair therefore it doesn’t damage the hair. It is also know for its moisturising properties so when you have it on your hair dying it is almost like a conditioning treatment. Long storey short my hair finally is getting over the damage, it is growing, shiny and my hair dresser actually complimented my hair. I love Henna!

So how do you use Henna….

IMG_1193

Henna comes in a block, the above picture is aprox half of a block and the whole block costs £10.95. It doesnt show it very well in the picture but it is split into about 6 chunks. In order to make this useable you need to melt the block in boiling hot water until the consistency is similar to normal hair dye. The Lush website describes the consistency as the same of hot chocolate.

So firstly you need to decide how much liquid you need to dye your hair (depending if its the full head or just roots). For me when I do the whole head I use aprox 4 chunks of the 6 so slightly more than is in the picture (I have hair just past my shoulder but it is quite thick) for my roots I use aprox 2 pieces.

The tricky bit is how much water to add, again for me for the whole head I use a mug of boiling hot water and for the roots I use just over half a mug of boiling water. I would suggest for the first time add really slowly as you don’t want the consistency to be too runny.

So the process:

  1. Break off the piece of the block of Henna (you might find this is a bit trial and error, it took me about 3 attempts to get the perfect amount.
  2. Add water (slowly) and leave the block in the boiling water turning slowly to cover all the bit until you can feel the block breaking up
  3. Make sure you put on gloves, use something like Vaseline on your ears, forehead and neck (although I normally don’t find I get any staining  but better safe than sorry).
  4. Keep breaking the block with a spoon and mixing until all of the lumps have gone and you have the consistency you need (again you might find this is trial and error). The colour will look very green and be a bit clay like – don’t be alarmed your hair doesn’t come out this way.
  5. Once it is well on its way to melting partition your hair off how you would like, and apply in the same way you would apply any package dyes (or the way you will have seen it don at the hairdressers). I type half my hair up and then slowly take it down layer by layer.
  6. Then apply with your fingers to your hair (or roots) are covered. It is a very messy process, I tend to get it all over my face, neck, shoulders and bathroom so make sure you get rid off all towels and wear minimal clothing unless you have scruffs you don’t care about. For me it has never stained my bathroom laminate floor or the sink but please take precautions.
  7. Once you have the correct coverage then you need to wrap your head in something to cover it completely, I use cling film but you could use a shower cap.
  8. I personally leave mine on for between 3 and 4 hours as I find anything less and my greys do get covered but are lighter than the rest of my hair if I do 3/4 hours my greys match the rest of my hair.
  9. Once you are ready to wash the dye off you will find that it has dried and gone clay like, this is normal. To wash this off you just use your normal shampoo and conditioner. Once in the shower wash off as much of the dye as you can, the hotter the water the easier it is as it kind of melts off then I find I need to shampoo twice and use slightly more than my normal conditioner.

While you are washing your hair it will feel like a birds nest, I started to panic the first time I used it as I thought my hair would be matted and stuck forever, it wont! Just keep rinsing until your hair feels normal.

Then dry and style as normal and you should find your hair is glossy and freshly dyed.

Have you tried Henna, what are your thoughts. I would love to hear any tips and tricks you have.

My (big) vegan breakfast

Hi everyone

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day. During the week at work I mainly have porridge, cereal or a cereal bar which suits my schedule  when it comes to weekends they just don’t cut it and I fancy a big tasty breakfast. I have a number of different combinations that I choose but my favourite is cheesy mushrooms and avocado on toast.

IMG_1260

It looks a little messy but tastes amazing. So here is how I make this yummy breakfast.  Firstly the avocado on toast, firstly you will need a yummy avocado which is just ripe to eat. I know most people are avocado experts now a days but just in case the best way to test if your avocado is ready is to squeeze it. You should be able to squeeze it all over but it shouldn’t feel mushy. You can just have the avocado plain but personally I like mine with lime as well.

IMG_1255     IMG_1254

I like my avocado smashed so cut open your avocado and squeeze into a bowl, then cut open your lime and squeeze in the bowl  to taste (personally I do the whole lime). Then simply mash together till you get the consistency you want.

IMG_1251

Next for the mushrooms, firstly wash the mushrooms and place in a pan with some vegan butter. Personally I like to add in pepper and paprika to taste as well.

IMG_1252      IMG_1253

Put them on the hob on a low heat until the mushrooms at cooked continually stirring the pepper and paprika into the butter. Once they are cooked I then add in my vegan soft cheese. I used the Asda own brand vegan soft cheese. I do this right at the end so that it doesn’t melt too much, because most vegan cheeses are oil based I tend to find if I cook it for too long it almost melts away. Then place in a bowl ready to eat.
IMG_1258

Finally assemble your avocado and mushrooms together with some toast or bread as you preference and finally eat and enjoy.

IMG_1260

I hope you have enjoyed ready this (and eating this is you have tried it). Let me know what you think. Let me know if you had any recommendations for your breakfast.
